Caution
-
As a result of a complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. Mascarin as follows: • Dr. Mascarin must adhere to the College’s Practice Advisory regarding Professional Advertising, especially but not only when using newer forms of advertising such as social media. To that end, Dr. Mascarin must also be mindful to adhere to the College’s Practice Advisory on the Professional Use of Social Media. In addition, it is certainly not appropriate for Dr. Mascarin to suggest that he has areas of specialization when he is a general dentist. Staff members at the College are available to provide information to members who pose questions about proposed professional advertising, and Dr. Mascarin should avail himself of those resources liberally when managing his professional advertising. • Dentists are distinguished not only by their cognitive and clinical skills, but also by their commitment to professionalism in their interactions with others, including the College. This includes being forthright in all communications with the governing body. To do so, Dr. Mascarin should take care to correspond with the College in a thoughtful and accurate manner that does not misconstrue the steps he has taken to address an issue that has been identified with his practice. It was unacceptable for Dr. Mascarin to submit to the College that he had addressed the professional advertising issues identified by the complainant when, in fact, he had not and had actually continued to engage in improper advertising practices.
